Nigerian table tennis star, Aruna Quadri, has predicted that the Nigerian contingent to the 2017 ITTF Challenge in Lagos will win the tournament which has players from 22 countries participating.
Speaking after the draw Wednesday, Quadri who is seeded number 1 in the tournament said he recognised the fact that expectations among fans were high. “I believe this is Nigeria’s time to win the tournament. It may not be me. It can be any member of the Nigerian team because I am highly optimistic that it is Nigeria’s time to win this challenge.”
Expectations are high and we want to be good ambassadors of Nigeria. As for me, I want to give my best, whether I am losing or winning.”
He spoke on the calibre of players in the tournament.” I am not scared because almost all the players here I have played against them. There is going to be massive support for me and other Nigerian players. We have to exploit it and give it our best.
In the draw conducted, Aruna Quadri was seeded number 1 while Egyptian star, Assar Omar, was seeded 64. Other Nigerians seeded include Abiodun Bode (8), Onaolapo Ojo (9), Shetty Sanil of India was seeded 16 and another Egyptian Saleh Ahmed is seeded 17.
Other top stars include LI Ping from Qatar, Olah Benedek from Finland, Assar Khalid of Egypt among others.
64 ping pongers will begin the men’s singles title chase Thursday while 32 female players were drawn for the women singles title. Nigeria’s Funke Oshonaike is seeded 24 while Jieni Shao from Portugal is seeded number 1.
