*Five LGAs in Enugu West contest for trophy
Ikeoha Youth Sports Championship for youths in the five Local Government Areas in Enugu West was flagged off by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu on Saturday at the Awgu township stadium. The championship which features competitions in football, basketball and athletics is an annual event sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate.
The Championship commenced with 0-0 match played between Aninri and Awgu in the football event.
Senator Ekweremadu told the participants that the championship is intended to imbibe in them the spirit of sportmanshp, competition and friendship and urged them to eschew the desire to win by all means adding that the championship was meant to provide opportunities for the youth to flourish in sports.
He said the expectation was that in the very near future, the participants would be representing various clubs at home and abroad as well as playing for the country. He pledged 100,000 and 50,000 naira for every goal scored to the team and goal scorer respectively.
The championship comes to a close on the 18th February with the final of the football event at the main bowl of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
The flag off was attended the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Hon Cecilia Ezillo, Representatives Toby Okechukwu and Dennis Amadi, the Deputy Speaker and members of Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Festus Uzor, PDP National Organising Secretary, Rt. Col. Akobundu, PDP National Youth Leader, Hon. SKE Udo Okoye, all the LG council chairmen as well as PDP LG chairmen in Enugu west among others
In another development, the Deputy Senate of the President has said that another of his major priority is to ensure that every child in Enugu West is assured of where to sit and learn stressing that where that is not the case in any public primary or secondary school in the zone, he should be notified to avail such schools of the opportunity.
Senator Ekweremadu said this while speaking on the occassion of the educational empowerment programme of the Hon Toby Okechukwu Foundation over the weekend in Aninri LG, Enugu State. The foundation gave out school desks and science equipment and also enrolled 30 persons into the ultra-modern European Vocational Training Centre, Enugu, set up by Senator Ekweremdu to address unemployment and engender self-employment in the state and beyond.
