*Taekwondo Prix takes off under CCSF
Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, will from Thursday witness influx of Taekwondo athletes from all parts of the country ahead of the first ever Prix Series put together by Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF).
The event sanctioned by FCT Taekwondo Association and scheduled for this weekend inside Old Parade Ground is expected to at most 60 Athletes from various states of the federation.
As at the time of filling this report, states like Kano, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger among others have registered their athletes that are battle ready.
Disclosing this in Abuja, Chief Executive Officer of CCSF, Chika Chukwumerije, maintained that a two-day training programmes which began Wednesday was designed for Taekwondo referees, coaches and athletes.
Chukwumerije who was in Las Vegas last month to obtain an upgraded coaching license explained that the training sessions was aimed at arming participants with latest fighting rules from the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).
Fresh from Tehran in Iran, only Female renowned Taekwondo Referee in Nigeria, Mrs Margaret Elizabeth Binga, who only returned days ago after undergoing weeks of intensive trainings on latest officiating rules from WTF will anchor the programme alongside Chukwumerije.
Chukwumerije further told us that the event was equally targeted at boosting knowledge of Nigerian Taekwondo officials and athletes ahead of future international competitions where new rules would apply.
“We don’t need to be left behind. Again we can’t wait for anybody because a lot is required of us. Our Athletes need to know and practice or fight in a more improved way,” He added.
During the competition on Saturday, Gold Medallists at Korea Taekwondo Cup, Elizabeth Anyanacho and Peter Itiku together with Bronze medallists Darius Danlami, Ismaili Mohammed amongst other Athletes, both male and female will battle it out in the -49kg, -57kg, -58kg, -68kg, +80kg, +67kg categories.
At the end, there will be medal presentations for the overall, runners-up and third placed fighter.
