AFN releases standards for int’l championships

*No event will suffer neglect with the new plans – Adeleye

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released three different standards for international championships against the next season which will guide the choice of athletes to represent the nation.

The standards which were released from Abuja on Wednesday has also been described by participants as fair enough. The AFN got praises for also releasing the calendar and the standard in good time during the off-season that will allow coaches and athletes to plan well for the new season.

For instance in the Standard A, in the 100metres, the female athletes will be expected to make 11.15s while the male must make 10.14s, whereas in the Standard B, female will be expected to make 11.45s and the males 10.22s whereas in the Standard C, the females will be expected to make 11.58s and 10.30s for the males.

Asked about the various field events and especially the middle and long distance events, the AFN Technical Director Mr Sunday Adeleye said, “the President is determined to ensure that every athlete enjoys the very best opportunities in their chosen fields. For instance, he decided to start the development centres in Jos as a mark of showing that his administration will not neglect any sport. Middle and long distance seems to have suffered neglect before but no more.

“I can reveal with authority that the middle and long distance races will receive serious financial injection to make our athletes compete favourably with East Africans.

Answering a question, he said, “let the President reveal later the deep inside packages for the immediate future of our sport. Javelin athletes are deeply involved. Plans have already gone into advanced stages to see the possibility of getting aerodynamic javelin for the country before the new season starts. He is not speaking but he is working round the clock to deliver a new difference.
