African wrestling: Nigerian lasses crops in five gold medals

Nigerian women wrestling athletes have cropped  five gold, one silver and four bronze in the cadet  freestyle event  at the Africa Wrestling Championships  at the Alfred Diete-Spiff Civic Centre, Port Harcourt.

Each of the 10 wrestlers who represented the country in the cadet freestyle won a medal in this category.

Yetunde Olatunji (40kg), Christian Ogunsanya (46kg), Mercy Adekuoroye (53kg), Simisola Olatunji (65kg) and Cecilia James (68kg) each won gold while Natasha Essien (73kg) clinched silver.

Esther Asaolu (43kg), Aina Ohida (49kg), Jumoke Adekoye (57kg) and Esther Kolawole (61kg) won bronze each.

Peter Ukoro handed Nigeria a surprise gold in the 55kg Greco-Roman event for cadet wrestlers. The youngster from Bauchi State defeated Omar Adel Abdelaziz of Egypt 4-0 in the final.

Lu Shawn Leonico KOK of South Africa settled for bronze after overcoming Namibia’s Linus Katujanda  4-0.

In the 60kg weight class, Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Robinson won bronze after subduing Tunisia’s Medhi Dheker, 8-0 while Ahmed Merikhi of Algeria won gold in that class by beating Zeyad Emadeldin Helmi Yakout of Egypt, 8-3.

Nigeria Wrestling Federation President Daniel Igali has said the competition has helped the country to identify hidden talents.

Igali said the cadet and junior wrestlers groomed in three national camps funded by the Rivers State government has afforded the country to have a pool of wrestlers for the future.

The Canadian Olympic gold medallist, who spoke at the opening ceremony of the AWC on Wednesday, commended  Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, for his contributions to the development of wrestling in the country.
