*As Salvation Cup ends
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has pledged his administration support to the State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
The Governor spoke at the final of the maiden edition of Soccer for Christ Under-16 Championship, tagged “Salvation Cup 2017” held at the Mainbowl of the Lekan Salami Stadium Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Gbade Ojo, the Governor acknowledged the prayers and support of all religious bodies in the state to the success of his administration in the last six years.
The final match between Triumphant Assembly Church and Samuel Oluniyi Evangelical Ministry (SOEM) ended in favour of SOEM. It was a great and explosive encounter as the match ended3-3 at the blast of the final whistle.
SOEM took the lead after 15mins dominance by the Triumphant Boys and later added second goal before the end of first half. Under 10mins of play in the second half of the encounter, SOEM added the third goal. The third goal by the SOEM Boys was all that Triumphant Boys were waiting for to wake up from their slumber.
Hard fighting energetic Triumphant Boys came from 3 goals down to level the score line to 3-3, this they achieved within the last 10 mins of the game. The match ended in penalty shootouts, where SOEM who was destined to win the trophy beat Triumphant by 3-2 and brought the final result to 6-5 in favour of SOEM. The 3rd Position ended in walk-over in favour of CAC Agbala-Itura as Molete Baptist Church did not show up.
Other dignitaries at the event include the Chairman of State Chapter of CAN, Pastor Benjamin Akanmu, Secretary Oyo CAN, Canon (Dr.) Olusegun Babatunde, Oyo State Football Association (OYSFA) Chairman, Chief James Oluyemi Odeniran, Secretary OYSFA, Mr. Kehinde Ojelowo, Chairman of NITO Sports, Mr. Adebowale A. Adeoye, Secretary, NITO Sports, Mr. Tosin Ayagboye, Men of God from various churches, OYSFA Board Members, Chairman General Sports Supporters Club and other Football Stakeholders?
The championship was initiated by the NITO Sports and jointly organised by the Oyo State Football Association, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo State Chapter and NITO Sports.
According to the championship initiator, Mr. Adebowale Adeoye, “the main objectives of the project are, to use football to evangelise Nigeria, to assist Nigeria Football Federation source for true age-grade players for the national teams and to encourage Nigerian youths to see career in football which is now the world most lucrative profession/business.”
The CAN Chairman, while addressing journalists called on all churches, ministries and Christian organisations to embrace football as a modern tool for evangelism. He then called on them to rally the tournament for 2018 and participate enmasse in the tournament.
