*Culprit in court on Monday

Consistency in the rape of young girls seems to be on the increase in Edo State with the case of another victim, 8-year-old girl who was raped by a 37-year-old man identified as Yakubu who is married with children.

The incident of the rape is about two weeks ago. This happened in Ugbor area, Benin City. The man was arrested and charged to court. The hearing would be on the 9th of October, 2017. The raped child is on admission at the hospital and has been sick since the incident.

Speaking on phone from Benin, Coordinator of Child Protection Network (CPN), Jeniffer Ero told www.gongnews.net is that, “the challenge here is, while the perpetuator is facing charges (justice), who should be responsible for the care of the child as the caregiver don’t resources for that. The chid is currently in the Central Hospital with the child seriously down.”

Jennifer Ero added, “ordinarily, the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs would have been in a position to support the rape victim to recover. I just spoke with the mother of the child. She is desperate because she has no money to pay hospital bills and to feed her raped child and the other children. We need to support her.”

When spoken to Jennifer Ero said, “I just left the hospital , a sister organisation known as Iroko has supported the mother of the child with the sum of N15,000 to clear all the medication bills and foodstuff  for her household. I need to also mention that the hospital Medical Director, Dr Ugbodaga, was so magnanimous to wave the hospital bill, we are deeply grateful to him.”

She added, “the Honorable Commissioner of Justice and the Attorney General of the of Edo state has assigned a State counsel to Oredo court 4 where this case is being heard. We are indeed happy with this political will from the Attorney General. CPN is meeting with the victim next week Tuesday.

Extending her appreciation, Ero said, “thank you Dr Esohe for all your support. CPN appreciates you. God bless you and your organisation, Iroko.

It would be recalled that there are about three previous rape cases in Edo State which are presently in various courts for prosecution.
