Badminton: We shall win the African championships – Gideon Babalola

Nigeria’s badminton team to the Africa badminton championship are confident they can emerge champions in South Africa.
The Nigerian team will be in South Africa where the championship is taking place from 16th to 23rd of April. Nigeria with a team of six players, comprising of four male and two female who would represent the country in the mixed team event as well as individual championship.
Captain of the Nigeria Badminton team, Gideon Babalola, who is the number ranked 1 player in the country, is confident Nigeria will come out top in the championship.
“We have trained together as a team for more than a month and we believe we are prepared to take up the trophy,” Gideon Babalola who is a staffer of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said in the interview before his team departed Nigeria with a lot of confidence.
According to him, “we are a household name in badminton in Africa. We have always been the team to beat. Our standard of the game and the fact that it is a Nigerian team which every other nation in the continent will want to beat. Infact, to some nations, beat Nigeria even if you can’t win the tourney. That makes it so important that we must always put in our best. We deserve the African title again.”
The players are: Habeeb Bello, Clement Krobakpo who is a staff of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), Salaudeen Abdulfatai, Momoh Zenab, Gideon Babalola and Dorcas Adesokan who is already in South Africa, on a training scholarship by the Badminton Confederation of Africa in preparation for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Nigerian team departed the country on Saturday 15th April for the championship, and will be joined by Dorcas when they touch down.
