Thursday will be one of the ennobling days in the life of the wrestlers who had represented the nation at the last World Championship in Paris-France as the Bayelsa state governor, Dickson Seriake, will be hosting them in Yenagoa.
The athletes and officials may have looked forward to being hosted by the Federal Government just as the senior women national team, D’Tigress, was hosted and honoured with cash prizes for winning the African title.
Certainly, they were disappointed. The wrestlers have not been honoured for winning at the World level. That the Bayelsa State governor is honouring them will be coming as a wonderful appreciation to them moreso, since the state had always supported them as home of wrestling.
Ondo state becomes a central factor in the team having contributed four members of the national team, the highest number. The state is yet to officially congratulate or even acknowledge the feats of these folks.
Speaking to www.gongnews.net the Women Affairs Commissioner for Ondo State, Hon Omowunmi Olatunji-Edet said, “I have personally met with Odunayo Adekuruoye. I have assured her that the First Lady, Arabinrin Betty
Anyanwu-Akeredolu and our sports-loving governor, Arakunrin Olurotimi Akeredolu, will soon meet with the members of the team from the state.”
“With the feat achieved by the quartet of Adekuruoye, Amina Adeniyi, John Emmanuel and their coach, Akuh Purity, they have taken the name and map of Ondo state to the global market. This is a massive publicity gambit for our young administration. I know that Mr Governor is happy and will honour them soonest.”
In a telephone interview from Ilorin, the Youth and Sports Commissioner, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, quipped, “we were inaugurated just last week in Akure. I had received briefing from the Ministry and from the General Manager of the Sports Council. I have already briefed Mr Governor who wanted the Niger Delta Summit to be done with before looking at the issue of hosting the coach and the three athletes.”
“As a people and government, I can tell you that athletes who make Ondo state proud will be well honoured with the tight economy of the state. You know too that Mr Governor is a keen sports person. His comments at the Tennis clinic hosted in Akure last week is a clean pointer.”
