*Takes home top Powerlifting championship title in USA
*Presidential aide, Dr Ankeli, congratulates Kareem, Bet9ja
Inside a packed Rio Hall in Las Vegas in Nevada, Kareem ‘Body’ Waheed representing Nigeria emerged as the top contestant at the recently held AAU Championships at the weekend, 16th September, 2017.
After months of hard physical training and preparation at his Magodo-based gym in Lagos and a long trip from Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos to Atlanta, then Nevada, all of Kareem Waheed’s hard work converged on a few moments when he showed his muscular mettle and lifted weights in the 82 Class.
He emerged victorious after the organisers judged him the winner, surpassing other contestants from Africa and the rest of the world in his weight class.
Speaking after the championship, Kareem said: “I’ve been training for over four months for this championship and it wasn’t easy. It was very difficult but I’m happy I won my category. I want to thank everyone that made it possible for me, my team at Bet9ja, they’ve been behind since day one. They showed me the best support. And my fans on social media @TheBodyKareem. You guys are the best!”
Details of his arrival in Nigeria were not released as at the time we went to press. With this, there are chances that athletes in the para sports will do better hence.
Meanwhile, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Disability Matters, Dr Sam Ankeli has sent a warm felicitation to Kareem. He spoke on phone with www.gongnews,net when he read the report. I also want to thank the Bet9ja for identifying with us. I want to call on corporate Nigeria to take a cue from Bet9ja, identify and support people with disabilities. Our records are too clear to show we are very productive in international sports.
