Less than three months after the take off of the Basic Olympic Opportunity Sports Training (BOOST) in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara, Moremi High School Offa has keyed into the system, with the adoption of baseball and softball as part of the school’s Inter-House Sports.
At the school’s Inter-House Sports last Thursday, baseball and softball made appearance as a demonstration sports and the Principal of the school, Alhaja Yemisi Kolawole-Adebiyi, promised to use that window to help popularise the game in the Local Government.
The Principal, who has been contributing to sports development in the area, is the first school head to adopt the game as part of the school’s sporting programmes and the sport will be among the scoring events in the school’s Inter-House Athletics competition henceforth.
The Nigeria Sports Development Fund Inc (NSDFI) project started in Offa in January, with about 10 primary and secondary schools already being part of the programme.
The schools, according to Coach Influence Gwede, are Iyeru Okin Secondary School, Adesoye College, Community Secondary School Offa, Offa Grammar School, St. Claires, LGEA School Ogidiri, Anglican Comprehensive College, Nawar-ud-deen and Iyeru Okin LGEA School.
The coach also added that a team is being packaged from Offa to participate in U-12 baseball competition in Poland in July. The competition holds between 15th to 23rd July.
Another team is also being packaged for a softball competition in Netherlands, between 23rd to 31st August.
Speaking on the programme, coach Olajide Abidoye said, “that Offa is having a chartered league less than a year after imbibing the game is feat. Another fact is, the massive population of the children, especially in Softball and parents who troop out to learn about the game has been a big challenge which coach Influence Gwede and his coaching crew have risen up. The sky is not the limit for us here.”
Nigeria Sports Development Fund Inc (NSDFI) is designed to salvage the nation’s image in international sports with a short term project.
