Former technical director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Brown Ebewele and former African triple jump champion, Rosa Collins, have regained their positions on the board. The petitions and appeals committee set up by the sports ministry to look into various cases arising from the 13th June sports federations election so ruled.
The annulment was announced on Friday in Abuja by the National Sports Federations Elections Petitions Appeal Committee as represented by Emmanuel Zira, during a media briefing.
Ebewele, who defeated Henry Amike on 23rd May to pick the Coaches/Technical officials slot on the AFN board, was disqualified in a list published on the eve of the elections in Abuja.
Gad Onumaegbu who was used to replace him had been sent out. Gad, an Abuja-based coach was reported earlier to have stepped down during the polls for technical representative.
On her part, Rosa Collins, who was earlier elected on the platform of National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS), had her name replaced with that of Dr. Gloria Obajimi on the day of the election. Obajimi was said to be in far away United States of America when the NAWIS election took place in Nigeria. Obajimi has been sacked by the Appeals committee.
Ibrahim Gusau: The election of Ibrahim Gusau as the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has also been annulled by the appeals committee. A bye-election has been ordered for 7th July. Gusau is expected to win again.
The committee having looked at the petition sent in by Charles Eyo, who was meant to contest from the north-east zone but was disqualified was upheld.
A bye-election has, therefore, been fixed for 7th July in Abuja. Gusau will stand for the zonal election and the presidential election same day.
