*Peter Rufai joins in the search for talents
Annually under 20 national football tournament of the Chief of Army Staff Peace Cup has kicked off in Kebbi State with 19 teams from various states across Nigeria.
The competition, which commenced on the 6th November, 2017 with screening of footballers would end on 25th November, 2017 at the Haliru Abdu Stadium complex, Birnin-Kebbi.
The finalists, would be participating in football competition in Brazil in March, 2018.
President of African Youth Sports Federation(AYSOF), Dr. Ahmed Lawal, who confirmed the development during a press conference in Birnin-Kebbi disclosed that any talented footballer selected during the tournament, would be recruited into national clubs that would exposed to other opportunities.
“The Chief of Army Staff believes in the fact ‘Peace can be achieved through Sports’. Hence, our Federation (AYSOF), decided to hold this tournament for peace, Unity and to help in identifying hidden football talents aspiring to achieve their ambitions. We will help them into lime light, facilitate their discoveries and disabuse their minds from all social vices and taking them from unemployment to meaningful engagement.
“It is to expose the hidden talents among the youths and at the same time, to discover those that would be useful for the nation, train them and expose them to professional teams that could expose them at the same time fit in and get engaged so that they could be far away from social vices. And secondly, to generate employments for these teeming youths.”
Dr Lawal disclosed that Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi state is sponsoring the tournament and he would be honoured with Nigeria Best Sports Governor during the final match of the competition.
Coach Paul Odey, chairman of the Technical Committee of the competition, who was also in the state to select talents, described the tournament as best avenue to replace aged footballers in Nigeria.
He disclosed that former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai is also expected in the state to select “talented players” who will participate in football completion in Lagos state, sponsored by Governor Akinwumi Ambode.
The former Kwara Football Academy (KFA) Assistant Technical Director said Kebbi and Lagos states are partnering on Sports to engage youths on meaningful development.
Participants teams includes Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Niger, Bauchi, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Plateau, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi states.
Other teams playing in the event include Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Benue, Kogi, Gombe and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
