*Sponsorship consultants paint bright future
As expected the troublesome troika of Nigerian athletics led by the Vice president, Olamide George with the duo of Messrs Brown Ebewele and Gabriel Okon boycotted the meeting of the board Wednesday.
The meeting presided over by the President, Hon Ibrahim Gusau, read out the apologies from Prof Emmanuel Ojeme, immediate past President, Solomon Ogba. A closed door meeting was held before two consultants were invited to make presentations to the board.
At the end of the meeting which lasted for two hours, fifty four minutes which took place inside the media centre of the National Stadium in Abuja, the President told www.gongnews.net “we have laid a solid grounds for our future drive to a great Nigerian athletics.”
“We had two sponsorship consultants who made presentations to the board. With these presentations, I can tell you with utmost confidence that a great future lies in wait for Nigerian athletics.
“Like I told the media after our election, we have to return to the basics while we still tend the minimum assets we have. Let me also reiterate that the six athletics development centres are still in our purview. These will be achieved with the kind of private financial injection we are looking at.”
The former House of Representatives member submitted that, “I have a mandate which is to take the sport out of the woods. That is the focus of my leadership. I must have some hurdles to cross. That is what you refer to as “division” in the board. We are united. Today’s meeting is a clear signal.
“Remember that our sport is the largest in the nation. That is why he expectations from us are so high. That is why I had to enter into consultations. We reviewed the World championships. We assessed our plans. The nation will soon get a rebranded AFN you all will be so proud of. Watch out for us.”
Messrs Amanze Marcus, Patrick Onyedum, Mrs Maria Woophil, Chief Falilat Ogunkoya-Omotayo, the Technical Director Sunday Adeleye were spotted in the meeting.
