Edo State Football Association chairman, Frank Ilaboya, has reiterated his determination to make Owan West local government area a massive sports hub in the state by the time he becomes the elected chairman in the forthcoming local government council elections.
The elections into the office of Chairman and Councillor across the 18 local government areas is scheduled to hold on 3rd March, 2018 and will be conducted by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).
The FA boss, contesting under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) is seeking to become the chairman of the local government stated this after he submitted his expression of interest form at the party secretariat, Benin City on Friday.
Ilaboya, a former chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Lagos State chapter noted that Edo State was known for sports in Nigeria, and that the impact was a result of the visionary leadership of the late Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia being a former governor of old Bendel State developed sports to higher heights that distinguished the state among others.
“I am a sports person, by the time I become Owan West council chairman, my administration will make the council a sports hub and make sure that the youths are well harnessed, take care of the leadership, the women and men, that is all about it. We have to ensure that everybody in the grassroots is well recognised and appreciated.
“Believe me by the time we get to the power, these are the things that we are going to expand upon, because we discovered that the level of education in Owan West is high and to make it sports hub.
“Do not forget in those days, what made old Bendel State a toast of others was due to sports, the late General Samuel Ogbemudia built the games village at Afuze which became the centre of sports in Nigeria. And this is what we are going to do in the council too, because sports is my primary constituency and everybody will benefit.
“When I was coming for the election of Edo FA, you can see that there is remarkable football development in Edo FA, we can see that for the first time international matches were played in Edo, we are going to host more. The Super Eagles may be here before they will leave for World Cup to play a friendly match. These are what we are going to take to the grassroots, thank God that we have the support.
So by 3rd March when I will be announced as the chairman of Owan West council, I will call you all to say thank you for the support.”
