Golden League: AFN provides improved welfare

*Accommodation, transport, feeding allowance

*Season’s calendar released by AFN

By Oluwole Francis

It is certainly a new dawn for not just the athletes but coaches in the nation’s largest sport, Athletics, if what www.gongnews.net scooped from authoritative sources close to the sport. The Golden League will enjoy double boost this season. One that is sure and concluded and one that is to come as a surprise to the body polity of the sport.

We can reveal unlike the previous season that the new leadership under Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau “has moved the stakes a little higher” said our source who begged passionately not to be mentioned yet.

With the release of the new season’s calendar, I can reveal to you that every athlete and coach participating in the Golden League will get accommodation, feeding and transport allowance. It is respectable and will be so highly appreciated by the sports people.

The top four athletes in each event will get paid. This is for the first three legs of the season. If the plans work out as it was designed, the last three legs will go for N15million while the national trial will have a N100million prize money. Every detail has been concluded.

Asked how true this can be, the source said, “ask every athlete who came for the last national trial in Abuja. Accommodation was provided by the Gusau Board less than 10 days after being elected into office. This has been worked out and the funds provided.”

There is still a big surprise package in the offing before the season starts. Nigerian athletics may not have had it this good for a long time. I can give you a guarantee to that effect.

For the availability to enter the Golden League phase, the All-Comers will signal off the season. Athletes will then qualify for the more lucrative Golden League which will enjoy double improvements in one season signalling a new era of “athlete-centred and coaches-focused regime,” quoting the President, Ibrahim Gusau in his exclusive interview hitting the news lines next week. Watch out.

God knows that I cannot wait enough for the season to start. These seems to be a return to glory is starting. May God give the new leadership to start and do as they planned for us.

the time table is ok.. the problem now is Nigeria really going to compete in the international events.? because as long as this year is concerned it was only the IAAF world championship Nigeria partook . we missed out of some events. especially the junior athletes. hope this won’t happen next year?

  3. I am impressed the program came out this early in the off season. It should allow athletes prepare both physically and psychologically. My only fear is the that, just like Nigerian budget, we may end up seeing 10% implementation/participation. It. Is a Nigerian thing. In the past we have seen people getting to competitions 3 days after the first events. We end up winning one isolated medal which of course is celebrated by a naive and
Mediocre govt. they won’t talk of the number of medals probably missed from late arrival. Hopefully this time around we ll break away from our bottle necked administrative imbroglio and infectious fire brigade approach.
