*Lays out plans to invigorate her one year tenure
*Her emergence is pleasant surprise – General John Shagaya
One of the leading Golf Clubs in Nigeria, the IBB international Golf and Country Club, Abuja now has a new Lady captain for its Ladies section. She is 52 year-old Grace Ihonvbere, wife of Professor Julius Ihonvbere.
A graduate of Banking and Finance from University of Toronto, Canada, Grace Ihonvbere succeeded Lami Ahmed at an election held on Saturday at the IBB international Golf and country Club, Abuja.
Speaking shortly after the election, the President of the Ihonvbere Foundation promised to join hand with other elected officers in the club to move the club forward.
“As a matriarch of Benin Golf Club Ladies Section and the first to sponsor an all female team to the MTN world Golf event, am more than prepared to lead the Ladies section of this club to greater heights.
I have designed lots of programmes that both ladies and members of this great club will not only enjoy but that will also improve their game”, she said.
Among programmes listed for her one-year tenure includes, monthly birthday Kitty, Charity Golf tournaments, Local and international Golf competition, veteran tournaments, Past Captains and Lady Captains tournaments and as well as foreign embassies versus IBB club competition.
Others are Children Summer Golf Development, Ladies Development Clinic, Ladies Open and closed tournaments, Caddies and staff tournament as well as Crazy Golf event.
Grace Ihonvbere congratulated the former Lady Captain, Lami Ahmed, for a successful tenure. She solicited for support from ladies and other members of the club during her one year in office.
“I knew I could win in an election after losing narrowly the last time,” Grace Ihonvbere said, “but I never thought of winning unopposed. I was overwhelmed with joy that people could really pass such a huge vote of confidence on me. I hope to work with the people and run an inclusive office; that is the only way we can grow the ladies’ section,” she said.
Prominent member of the Board of Trustees of the IBB Golf & Country Club, Abuja, Senator John Shagaya, has hailed the unopposed return of Mrs Grace Ihonvbere as the club’s Lady Captain as a “Pleasant surprise.”
Shagaya who spoke to the media from his vast Karu, Abuja, home, said Ihonvbere worked hard to make the immediate Lady Captain, Lami Ahmed’s regime a success, despite losing narrowly to her in last year’s close-call election.
“I know women, so I was shocked that after a bitter race where she lost, Ihonvbere could still put herself together to work with Lami Ahmed. Grace even helped to upgrade the ladies’ changing room. I don’t have any doubt in my mind that she would be a great Lady Captain, because this is the first time we are having a captain elected unopposed after a long time. I think something like this happened twice when we were still developing.
“I must add that Grace Ihonvbere is a brave woman and members just like her. She has a ready smile for everyone and she is generally loved by members. I will be disappointed if Grace Ihonvbere can’t turn the ladies section around. I mean, she should be able to add to the legacies Lami Ahmed left behind,” said the former lawmaker.
Grace Ihonvbere was among the officers elected at the 2017 Annual General Meeting of the Club held on Saturday at the IBB international Golf and country club, Abuja.
