*Former AFN boss dies, buried in Kaduna
Group Captain Lawan Dangaji, the former President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) & Judo Federation of Nigeria (JFN), a successful sports administrator, has died and had been buried.
President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Hon Ibrahim Gusau, expressed shock at the news of his passage. He said, “we thank God for his life. He was a fantastic leader. His passion was in the middle and long distance which he brought to prominence when he was President of the AFN. May his soul rest in peace.”
Chief (Dr) Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigeria Sports Development Fund Inc (NSDFI) of which Dangaji was a member said, “we have lost another giant. Even while on his sick bed as a result of old age, he would call at regular intervals to find out what progress is being made about developing new kids on the sports scene.”
“His passion for middle and long distance, which as a young military officer he did, informed our decision some years ago to activate our development programme from the Mambilla project which was designed to start in Jos before the end of this year. Now that he is no more with us, we shall work extra hard to immortalise the project in his name,” said the former proprietor of Iwuanyanwu Nationale FC of Owerri.
Former fastest African track queen, Chief Mary Onyali yelled when we sought her views on his passage, “he was a quiet speaking President, very firm and fatherly. His tenure brought to prime long distance runners like the soldier Abbas Muhammed and his folks which we call those days as ‘tau-tau.’ My prayers goes to his family.”
It would be recalled that Dangaji served as AFN President as a Wing Commander from 1985 to 87.
