Handball: I don’t see FCT defeat my girls – Isiaka Atanda

*We want to win for Emmanuel Olubiyo, our chairman

Hosts, Kwara, will be playing the FCT Queens of Abuja, will be contending for the gold medal of the ongoing National Youth Games in Ilorin to which coach Isiaka Atanda has disclosed cannot get this far and lose. I don’t see the FCT defeat my girls, not in the final after all we have gone through to get to this stage.

According to coach Atanda, we have two centres, the Ruth Ogbeifo Weightlifting programme in Offa and our girls in Ilorin. All the girls in this team started training in January 2017. This is why I must thank our chairman, Emmanuel Olubiyo, for all the financial, material and psychological support he has invested in us over the years. We want to win this championship for him.”

Coach Atanda’s lasses have been a high scoring side. In the semi-final, they defeated Katsina 35-12. In the quarter-final, the Kwara girls dealth 50-12 against Imo. They defeated Bayelsa by 30-24. Bauchi was defeated 53-12.

FCT Queens had defeated Bayelsa in the semi-final to go face the Kwara girls. The Bayelsa Queens quartet of Blessing Blankson, Innitimi Sylvanus, Tosin Ajayi and Erepedi Johnbull continually troubled the FCT ladies with their superlative combination. The first half ended in favour of FCT Queens with 9-8 goals.

The FCT quartet of Favour Abdullahi, Nancy Johnson, Daniel Lydia and experienced winger Joy Peter was what the FCT needed to outrun the Bayelsa Queens in the second half, as Bayelsa lost steam and continued to make forced errors and turnovers which FCT Queens made no mistake in converting to goals, thereby winning the match with a comfortable 23 – 15 goals advantage.

The coach Isiaka Atanda girls have scored over 150 goals in this championship. The final match promises to be an epic encounter while, the third place match will be played between Bayelsa Queens and Katsina ladies.
