*Intrigues, passion, fight colour sports federation elections

Former House of Representatives member, Hon Ibrahim Gusau is now the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). Frank Orbih won in badminton, Margaret Achibi in Taekwondo and Sam Ocheho in handball.
Meanwhile, it was such a great admixture of different degrees of intrigues, emotional outpouring, fights that coloured the elections into the 31 boards. The election created a high decibel of tempers, tantrums and passion in various federations especially handball, athletics, rugby and a handful of other interest groups.
Athletics was the hottest. Brown Ebewele and Rosa Collins who were thought to have picked board tickets woke up on the day of election and found they have not only been disqualified but replaced.
The duo held the proceedings for almost two hours. After the zonal elections were completed and the electoral committee was set for the national, Ebewele created a new scene which resulted into another shouting match. Rosa Collins had to descend low to hit another delegate. He was eventually evacuated by policemen present in the stadium. They were arrested and released upon the intervention of the new President, Ibrahim Gusau.
In the race for Vice President, Olamide George defeated African record holder, Mary Onyali. However, the zonal elections in athletics produced Olamide George (south west), Gabriel Okon (South South), NTA’s Amanze Marcus win the North Central ticket.
One of the highlights is the defeat of Engineer Emeka Onyeama, the immediate past President of the Cricket Federation of Nigeria lost out at the zonal election.
Handball: In handball, former player, Jubril Seidu had to withdraw for his colleague, Samuel Ocheho who had a stroll in the park against two-term President, Yusuf Dauda.
In the ticket for zones, the south West ticket saw former Nigerian goalkeeper Samuel Johnson lost to Samuel Ocheho 4-2 in the build-up. In the south south, Kwashie Thompson won against Archibong Inyang 6-0. South East, Onyin Nwamah beat Austin Ataste 3-2. North East, Umar Hamajoda beat former national team left winger Hussein Mohammed by 3-2.
In the north central, former national team pivot player Halima Benjamin defeated Bala Mohammed. Sheidu Jubril defeated former board member Hamza Musa.
Taekwondo: Mrs Margaret Achibi emerged as the new President. Her board members elected from the zones include Apara Oluwatoyin (south west), Igbinosa Charity (south south), Abdullahi Seidu (north west), Tony Anafuli (north central), Abubakar Agu (north east).
As at the time of going to press, some of the Federations were trying to conclude their electoral processes.
