*May get wild card for Governor’s Cup
Christopher Bulus of Nigeria, over the weekend, emerged boys’ singles champion at the 2017 ITF Junior Circuit in Lome, Togo following a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sylvestre Mannou of Benin Republic.
The win capped a memorable three weeks for the 16-year-old who started the three-leg tournament with a bronze in Benin which was followed with a silver in the second leg.
It was a case of third time lucky for the Aces Tennis Academy player who had twice lost in the final of the point-earning tournament this year where on both occasions he succumbed to Eliakim Coulibaly of Cote d’ivoire. Before defeating Mannou, he won silver in the doubles where he partnered Darrshan Suresh of Malaysia as they lost in the final to French duo of Raphael Perot and Hugo Jardin.
With his latest feat, which may came with a reward of wild card to next week’s Governor’s Cup Lagos ITF Tennis championship, Bulus is expected to move into the top 500 in the world junior rankings to be released this week.
He rose significantly from world number 779 to 621 last week by finishing in third and second places in the opening two legs.
Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) President, Dayo Akindoju, expressed delight at the performance of Christopher Bulus stressing that, among others, his feat would further boost the Federation in its renewed commitment to develop Nigerian tennis from the grassroots. he urged him to work harder for greater results.
He pointed that Nigeria has never been short of talent that can rise to superstars urging for individual and corporate support for the sport.
Nigeria’s Adetayo Adetunji won the girls’ singles of the first leg three weeks ago in Togo.
