*Sheds tears in victory
Like a prophet, Africa’s numero uno and number one ranked player in the ITTF Nigeria Open had wished this is the time of a Nigerian even if not him. Home-boy, Bode Abiodun, Saturday evening caused an upset defeating fans’ favourite, Aruna Quadri sending the indoor hall of the Teslim Balogun stadium in the round of 16 single into silence.
After winning the match 4-2, the joy of an unseeded Bode Abiodun could not bear it but went down in tears. He got a congratulatory handshake from Aruna. The match ended 9=11, 11-7, 5-11, 10-12, 11-9 and 9-11.
Aruna Quadri had told journalists after the draws that, “I believe this is Nigeria’s time to win the tournament. It may not be me. It can be any member of the Nigerian team because I am highly optimistic that it is Nigeria’s time to win this challenge.”
Expectations are high and we want to be good ambassadors of Nigeria. As for me, I want to give my best, whether I am losing or winning.”
Also in the female round of 16, Funke Oshonaike also lost to U-21 champion, Piccolin 11-5, 4-11, 8-11, 5-11 and 15-17.
