*Giver of the bribe will be prosecuted
Are there still saints in the land? This is a question any of the prophets would have asked if they had to review the Nigerian situation what with the high quality of poverty nibbling principles in the face of hunger.
This is the case of Nasiru Zango, a journalist with Freedom Radio in Kano. He was offered N700,000 to stop the report he was doing which was exposing certain big persons in the society. He could have collected the money, walk away and drop the report but a policeman, conscience, was harassing him.
The Kano State Anti-corruption and Public Complaints Commission exposed the journalist. They claimed the journalist has handed over a cash of N700, 000 bribe given to him in order to kill the story he was working on.
Muhyi Rimingado, Chairman of the commission, made this known during a press conference to update the public on the progress of investigation into alleged illegal construction of shops at Kofar Wambai market in the state.
Rimingado named Nasiru Zango, a journalist with Freedom Radio. He said the bribe was given to him in order to stop a story he was running on a magazine programme on the station. Who gave the bribe was not yet disclosed.
“The journalist walked into the office with the money given to him by one of the party in the case, asking him to stop running the story but his conscience is not at peace with the money,” Rimingado said.
He said the money will be presented as evidence when the investigation is concluded and the case taken to court. Therefore, the extended interpretation is obvious, the giver of the bribe will be named and prosecuted.
We hope the anti-corruption agencies have taken enough precaution to protect the reporter from harm’s way. He may be targeted as the accessory after the fact of the grim exposure.
