Kebbi state government has released N40 millions to fight rodents and Quella birds across various farms in the state to protect farmers during the dry season farming activities.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Garba Muhammad, who confirmed this while speaking with newsmen in his office also disclosed that 40,000 farmers have shown interest to participate in this year Anchor’s Borrowers Programme of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
His words: “Kebbi state government is very sensitive to the yearning and plights of it citizens. After series of reports of invasions of rodents and Quella birds in many farms, we decided to be proactive on these incidents. The Governor has approved N40million to address the issue of rodents and Quella birds invasions in the state. The money has been released, from this week, we would start distributing the insecticides that would be used against these pests.
“And for the rodents, there would be area spray where there is high populations of rats to reduce their population so that they could not cause most havoc to the farmers.
“Also on Wednesday, we held a meeting with farmers and CBN delegates on Anchor’s Borrowers programme and we are envisaging that 40,000 farmers would participate in this year programme.”
He disclosed that farmers who had repaid their loans successfully last year would be automatic benefited from this year Anchor’s Borrowers programme.
Muhammad explained that the state government has commenced sensitization of farmers and residents within the FADAMA farms areas across the state where insecticide would be applied against rodents, Quella birds ,not to eat any dead animals if found in their farms to avoid eaten poisoned.
The Commissioner added that the state government would also hold Farmers forum and agro business exhibition on 26th of February, 2018 to enlighten farmers on different opportunities in the agriculture sector.
