Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of perpetrating massive rigging and other electoral frauds during the Saturday local government elections in the state.
Kwara PDP chairman in the state, Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo said this on Saturday while reacting to the conduct of the election in an interview.
According to Oyedepo, the election was characterised by snatching of ballot boxes in many polling booths across the state, stuffing of already thumb printed ballot papers into boxes and inadequate ballot papers.
With the initial results flowing out of the polling units after the voting processes too place in the 16 local councils, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were leading in what looks like a clean sweep and a political revolution. People came out well to vote and protect the votes which were closely marked.
Teachers and civil servants turned out in their strong numbers and massively voted against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In some of the centres, rechargeable lamps were provided by citizens to ensure the processes were completed and results announced therein. For instance, the PDP won all three wards in the Emir of Ilorin’s palace.
In Ekiti LGA, the APC had a great outing leading the log in most of the results announced from the polling units. From the results calculated, the APC won the local government well with clear margins. APC had 20,612 to PDP’s 3,205.
In Offa, the APC won the chairmanship with 29,605 to the PDP’s 3,205. The APC won all 12 councillor seats. The APC seems to sweep the Kwara South senatorial district clean.
In the units in the state capital, there were protests about the election materials not provided enough to make for a free flow of election.
Many of the ruling party faithfuls had it rough with the citizens. A former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Saka Yusau was reportedly chased away from his polling unit in Adewole ward.
Former governor and Senator Mohammed Sha’aba Lafiagi had it rough with his people leading to the burning of his house in Lafiagi. Three persons were reported killed as a result.
Major highlights show how the Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki lost to the PDP in his ward, Balogun Ajikobi, where the chairmanship result showed PDP 125 to APC’s 36 and in the Councillor election, the PDP scored 125 to the APC’s 36.
Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem, the PDP won with 119 to APC’s 18 in the chairmanship results while PDP had 113 to APC’s 18 in the councillor election.
