Senator Abubakar Kyari, chairman Senate committee on defence has commended the initiators of the Kanem Sports+Peace initiative for the North East region which will help the children and youths to relief the trauma of the
Speaking at his office when he hosted the management of the Mary Onyali Sports Foundation (MOSPORTS) and Wanoriya Amana Foundation led by Chief Mary Onyali, the senator representing Borno North said, “this is novel, well thought out, rehabilitative and deep.”
“Incidentally, it is the people of my constituency who were the worst hit. With the way you designed this programme they are going to be the highest beneficiaries. I am particularly thrilled by the education content of the sports project.
“My people have been seriously traumatised. Ordinarily, sports has been the biggest business in the world even in Nigeria. Sports will give my people hope, livelihood for the beneficiaries to support their communities and families. Many of these kids hae been out of school for about five years.
“This is a welcome development. We have the character and strong will which if put into sports will distinguish us in a short time. With the coming of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) we can and should incorporate sports into the reconstruction, rehabilitation and revitalisation process. Our people are presently hungry, angry and displaced. We have to make the programme local such that they will yearn for it.
Speaking earlier, Chief Onyali said, “we realise how and what sports can do to help the traumatised region have a salve, grow hope, use the play content in sports to clean the trauma and bring local and international resources to make them leaders of the world.”
“We want all people of the country to be able to appreciate that it is now that the people of the north east region
needs our support the most. It is this period that any form of help will make a bigger representation. Let us make this a national project.”
“I am also happy to announce that the President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Hon Ibrahim Gusau has announced the endorsement of the programme. Two, we have recruited 20 coaches for the programme. We want to acquire equipment and take the training programme to the IDP centres.”
Also on the entourage of the courtesy visit are Engineer Kabiru Wanori the Chief Executive Officer of Wanoriya Amana Foundation, Mr Olajide Fashikun, Alhaji Mohammed Gobama (Dan Massanin Marwa) and Alhaji Mustapha Mohammed Kwali-Kwali.
