Fifty athletes have gotten massive boost from the Mary Onyali Sports Foundation (MOSPORTS) during the All Comers athletics championships in Abuja for excelling in their fields. They got kitting from the Federal Inland Revenue Service-branded kits.
Athletes from the Adeleye Foundation from Kogi West local government area were the first to get spike shoes from former African sprint queen, Chief Mary Onyali. They distinguished themselves separately only to find out they were from the same team.
Making the presentation to the athletes, Chief Onyali said, she was attracted to support the athletes because of the great potentials they demonstrated without basic equipment. When I found out that they were from the same club, I was personally motivated to donate the kits to them.
The gifts which came to the athletes as a big surprise. “I am shocked. This is our first time on tartan. This is going to make us work very hard. We shall make her proud. We never believed such a legend was watching us. With this we return home, work harder and come out bigger and better,” said the captain of the team, Medayese Patrick.
In his comments, the coaches of the team, Adebayo Bada and Gideon Ayodele thanked the former Queen of the track for this wonderful gift. We are very well motivated. With this, we shall go and do more. We never knew our athletes we being watched. The spikes shoes and the kitting are just outstanding.”
Mr Ayodele in his contribution said, “when I told the Senator representing our zone, Dino Melaye, he was particularly excited. He had no option to ask “is it the same Mary Onyali that we know? Wow! We thank her for the special gesture for the youths from my constituency. On behalf of our people, we appreciate her.”
The beneficiaries of the gift include Ganiyu Sebirat, Musa Rashidat, Abubakar Rukayat, Mohammed Yunusa and Olubo Michael.
Commander Ayodele of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) was full of praises for chief Onyali for what she “planned to do privately which turned out to be a community package. We are so proud of you. Our prayers is for God to continue to bless you.”
Owner of the club who incidentally emerged to be the Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Sunday Adeleye, in his reaction said, “we can only say thank you for this gesture. Chief has been a secret supporter of our athletes even before now. This only happened to have bursted out to the public domain.”
Later, other athletes who gave a good account of themselves got their shares of the gifts.
