Labour Unions within the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) have raised an alarm about the invasion of their headquarters on Monday by elements loyal to the suspended Executive Secretary, Prof Usman Yusuf, who was suspended but is resisting the suspension.
According to a widely circulated SMS sent out and signed by Achir Chris, workers of the organisation have been instructed to put on their identity cards and or wear the regalia of the Union.
The full text of the union reads: “Fellow comrades, we have reliably gathered that Dr Usman Yusuf, the suspended Executive Secretary of NHIS is mobilising some disgruntled elements to come and cause chaos and crisis at the head office in Utako on Monday.
In view of this, you are hereby urged to be vigilant, come with your identity card and if possible be on our union regalia as a mark of identity in solidarity with the union to protect the scheme against any hired intruders; let’s guide and protect the scheme jealously because we don’t have any other place apart from NHIS.
Remember, soja go, soja come barack remains. Aluta continua, victoria ascerta. (Achir Chris – for and on behalf of the joint union, NHIS).
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, has reiterated that the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof Usman Yusuf, must proceed on suspension.
It would be recalled that the NHIS boss was directed to proceed on suspension last week to pave way for the panel of inquiry raised by the Ministry to probe the activities of the agency.
However, the embattled NHIS Executive Secretary has said that he would not respect the ministerial directive.
The House of Representatives has also asked the Minister to reverse the directive and allow the NHIS boss to resume and remain in office while investigation continues.
But, a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Health, Mrs Boade Akinola, states: “The Federal Ministry of Health hereby dissociates itself from the letter written by the suspended Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf.
“The Ministry hereby states that Prof. Yusuf, being a public officer, is bound by the regulations governing the Public Service. The NHIS is an agency supervised by the Federal Ministry of Health.
“The Administrative panel of Inquiry raised by the Ministry to investigate activities of the agency has commenced its assignment with specific terms of reference.”
