*They have no power to give awards
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has denounced and disclaimed the awards purportedly to be presented to Senator Dino Melaye on Tuesday by a self-styled group, the Senate Press Corps.
The position of the NUJ was contained in a statement by its President, Abdulwaheed Odusile.
The statement, signed the Senior Assistant National Secretary, Gbemiga Bamidele, said the Union did not approve such awards and does not recognise the Senate Press Corps.
The statement reads: “The National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists Abdulwaheed Odusile wishes to inform members of the public that the Union has not approved any award for Senator Dino Melaye and 14 others as is being peddled by some unauthorised members of the Union. The award purportedly by the Senate Press Corps of the Union is illegal as the body is not recognised by the NUJ constitution to give any award to anybody.
“The Union dissociates itself from the so-called conferment as it did not comply with the provision of the Constitution of the body on such issues, hence the nullification of the award.
“The National President has directed that we inform the public that anybody who deals with this group on behalf of any organ of the Union does so at his or her own risk please.”
