*We are celebrating the life and times of the sage
Chief Josiah Sunday Olawoyin, the 1979 gubernatorial candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and the first Asiwaju of Offa, will return to life on Tuesday when the former Secretary of National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Chief Ayo Opadokun, will address the colloquium on the late politician.
Opadokun, who incidentally is from the same community, will be speaking on “Offa in Yoruba History” at the Jonathan Duro Soleye hall inside the Offa Descendants Union secretariat at 10.00am.
Olawoyin, a very principled politician who led the opposition in his days, was a very close acolyte and friend of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi. He died in 2000. A club, Galaxy Clique, which was founded 30 years ago by some Offa patriots for the development of the ancient town are behind the colloquium.
Spokesman of the Galaxy Clique, Muideen Ibrahim told www.gongnews.net that, “members of the club are professionals in diverse areas of human endeavours. They have contributed their quota in the past in various capacities vis-à-vis supply of dispensing envelopes to Offa General Hospital, enlightenment programmes and presentation of awards amongst others.
The Club re-branded and re-energised recently and as a result, members have re-dedicated themselves to the service of Offa community in all ramifications.
On Tuesday 26th December, 2017 the club will be having her 2017 Annual Colloquium in honour and memory of the late Chief Josiah Sunday Olawoyin.
The lecture will be delivered by Mr. Ayo Opadokun, the former NADECO Secretary and a key note speaker of high repute whilst the chairman of the occasion will be Prof. Rasheed Ijaodola, the Dean, Faculty of Law, Igbinedon University, Okada in Edo State.
A lot of highly placed members of the society, the immediate family members of the Olawoyin clan and his political associates both within the state and outside are expected to grace the colloquium.
Muideen Ibrahim added, “the club decided to honour late Chief J.S. Olawoyin because of his meritorious service in the past to the development of Offa community in particular, Kwara State in general and the nation as a whole.
Ibrahim added, “late Chief J. S. Olawoyin was a political juggernaut and community man per excellence. He was the former Administrative Officer of Offa Descendants’ Union and he served the Union meritoriously and dedicatedly.
Infact he can be described as the best governor Kwara State never had. Olawoyin contested under the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in the Second Republic. His party eventually won the 1983 election that produced Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo as governor. He was in love with the down trodden and fought their courses. Hence, he was greatly loved by his community.
Olawoyin did for Offa what late Chief Obafemi Awolowo did for the South West, Pa Olawoyin did for Offa what Mahatma K. Ghandi did for India.
He also fought for the emancipation of Nigeria most especially with respect to the nation’s political independence in 1960. He was such a dedicated disciple of late Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo.
Olawoyin was a colossus and he was described as a moving encyclopaedia because of his ability to recollect dates and historical events with absolute ease.
Olawoyin was a grassroots man. He was so loved by his community that he was installed as the first Asiwaju of Offa.
He passed on to the great beyond on Tuesday 10th October, 2000.
