Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, will host 12 soccer teams across the state as the stage is set for the maiden edition of the Oyo 5-A-side football league among the corporate bodies and families across the state.
The event is scheduled to hold in all Saturdays and Sundays in August and September at the Astro Turf field, Lead City High school, Onireke, Ibadan.
Speaking at the press briefing heralding the league on Thursday, the organiser of the programme, Sola Adewumi of footyfanz said it is necessary to hold the programme in order to engage families in different kinds of exercises.
He stated that family members including mothers and children can also come around and participate in health talk, fashion show among others.
He said: “This is first of its kind 5-a-side soccer league organised competition which will help all members of the families to have fun fares with children and engage in kiddies game as it is not going to be football alone.”
In his remark, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barrister Yomi Oke said this is one of his ideas saying: “This is a family event where there will be health talk, health check up among other evens.”
The registered teams include: Access Bank, Skye Bank, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Oyo State chapter, Oyo State House of Assembly, Oyo State Sports Council, Lead City, University College Teaching Hospital, Mauve 21 and Catholic Organisation of Nigeria team, among others.
The soccer event is one of the fun providing measures to boost the family due to its team work capabilities. The pitch on which it is played is not as large as that of the 11-A-side. It is a function of all members of the team working together attacking and defending. It is also about skill expression without the know-it-all or selfish instincts.
