Oyo, Kwara in line to host Gold Cup 2017

Sunshine Stars of Akure and Enyimba FC of Aba…during the Gold Cup tourney

With the successful delivery of the 4th edition of the Nigeria’s most prestigious domestic league pre-season tournament, Gold Cup tourney, the 5th edition could be hosted by either Oyo or Kwara State. This will be the first edition to be hosted outside of Ijebu-Ode and Ogun state.

General Coordinator of the tourney, Tunde Shamsudeen, disclosed to www.gongnews.net after the Lobi Stars of Makurdi were crowned champions of the 4th edition after they defeated Mountain of Fire Miracle Ministries of Lagos 4-3 on penalties after the regulation time ended in a stalemate.

Gold Cup…may be leaving its traditional home to other cities

“The next edition of the Gold Cup could be moved out of it’s original home, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State to either Oyo or Kwara State. The basis being that, we want to spread it to other Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fans state.

“If you know the NPFL history, you would agree with me that there’s a good followership in both states. As it is, either you are a Shooting or Crown FC fan in Oyo or Kwara United or ABS FC fan in Ilorin. Aside that, both states boast of good sporting facilities as two games can be hosted per day.

“Also the hotels there too are affordable for any team who wants to have its pre-season camping in either of the states.”

It would be recalled that Ijebu-Ode has hosted four of the Gold Cup events with the following teams Sunshine Stars, defunct Sharks FC, Kano Pillars and Lobi Stars winning the trophy that’s donated yearly by Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari.
