*Effiong in conflict with Gov of Akwa Ibom
By Sandra Onyekwere
In what looks like the further depletion of the rank of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Senate, Akwa Ibom South Senatorial district’s Senator Nelson Effiong, on Thursday, defected to the rival All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the PDP has vowed to challenge his defection in court.
Effiong, who announced his defection to the APC during plenary on Thursday, hinged his decision on the internal crisis in the PDP in the state.
www.gongnews.net gathered that his defection was discussed during the PDP caucus meeting held at the Senate Hearing Room 1 on Tuesday.
At the meeting, it was gathered that members of the PDP caucus kicked against the move.
Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, promised at the meeting to mediate between Effiong and the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, over a disagreement between them.
The source said: “the senator (Nelson Effiong) is leaving PDP because of the rift between him and the governor of his state. So, at the meeting, the caucus resolved to mediate between them.”
