*Gets automatic boot for their behaviour
*I have nothing to do with their strike – Elegbeleye
Monday in Akure, the Ondo state capital, some athletes embarked on a protest march which sneaked to the ears of the state governor, Barrister Olurotimi Akeredolu (SAN) who was humiliated by the protesters leading to their sack from the employ of the Sports Council.
According to sources who witnessed the ugly development, the governor and his entourage attempted to speak with the aggrieved athletes who refused to grant him audience.
It got to a stage they started singing songs of protest leading the governor to angrily leave them. Later, he (the governor) made enquiries about the grievances of the athletes and when he got a clear picture of the development, he ordered them to be sacked for lacking decorum.
It was when the information of their sack reached them that they unanimously took to Facebook page to start attacking the person of the former Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye.
When contacted, Hon Elegbeleye said, “is it an offence that I am from Ondo? The writers of those materials must be illiterates and mischief makers. That explains why they lacked reason to take the opportunity that Mr Governor wanted to have a chat with them and they could not maximise that opportunity.”
Outside of these, I have nothing to do with the Ondo State Sports Council. The mandate of my committee was to reposition the Ondo State Football agency (OSFA) and the assignment was for one month. We have since finished the job.
The Otunba of Ikare added, “OSFA is strictly a football issue and nothing else. I was not even aware that some athletes were on strike until you asked me and when I called was told it is true. OSFA has nothing to do with other sports.
Part of the grievances of te athletes is that the government is owing them 10 months salaries and they’ve not been compensated for medals won for the state. This was before the coming on board of the new administration of the sitting governor.
