*Many headaches he must resolve to start well
By Olajide Fashikun
Professor William Barnabas Qurix, a don of Architecture, has been named as the new Vice Chancellor of the Bingham University, Karu. He was the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the Kaduna State University.
He has resumed duty and the academic community looks forward to him to resolve the mess that his predecessor created for the institution to get its feet back on the path of progress.
Dalhatu Haruna, a public analyst who followed Qurix’s tenure in Kaduna told www.gongnews.net that, “the uproar and applauds that followed the appointment of the thenVice Chancellor of the Kaduna State University (KASU) reflected the character and diversity of the people that make up that state (Kaduna). The good news, however, that followed the various sentiments, which shrouded the appointment of Professor William Barnabas Qurix was his ability to leave no one in doubt that he is an accomplished academic whose religious or ethnic background had no influence in his professional career.”
Coming into a saner Bingham University, he is more inclined to achieve greater results here. I read so much of the mess he would be inheriting but I can tell you that he is going to distinguish himself more than he did in a very divisive Kaduna environment.
The unprecedented development that the university (Kaduna) witnessed within a short period, some disgruntled elements still peddled false allegations just to incite enmity among citizens of Kaduna State and to jeopardise the fragile peace being enjoyed in the state.
Emperor Samuel Kursim Leonard-Fwa: He was the Vice Chancellor before he was ingloriously sacked for the gross mismanagement of the University. He operated above the laws setting up the institution which belongs to the ECWA church.
With the new Vice Chancellor, it would be expected of Rev. Jeremiah Gado who is the ECWA President to learn to respect that the University has its own rules and regulations.
A member of the local Academic Staff Forum told www.gongnews.net that the appointment of Prof Qurix followed due process. Unlike Prof Fwa who came ninth amongst those interviewed and got appointed, the new man is an accomplished Prof. His records from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria are heart warming.
Qurix’s headaches: He will be saddled to resolve the issue of the Registrar, the two Deputy Vice Chancellors and a six month salaries overhang, debts running to about N7billion amongst many others.
This will include the appointment of the Director of Works, who is the former Vice Chancellor’s cousin. He was employed without following the due process for employment of a Management Staff;. The Vice-Chancellor never advertised this position but appointed and imposed his cousin Loacha Buba as the Director of Works on the University.
Same goes for that of the University Bursar. Fwa brought in a school mate of his without recourse to the rules.
Over 100 appointments made without recourse to due process may require being reviewed by Qurix.
There is the case of a Lecturer I, from Nasarawa State University Keffi who was given a Professorship. Some recently awarded Professors were appointed by Fwa on his table without any form of external assessment. None of these appointments were considered at Appointments and Promotions Committee. This concerns all the Professors appointed between 2013 to 2017.
