*Storms family house, arrests two others
Men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) stormed the country home of the Elombah family in the early hours of Monday and rounded up UK-based human rights activist, lawyer cum journalist, Daniel Elombah and his brothers Tim Elombah and Izuchukwu Elombah.
The armed policemen were reported to have invaded in a commando-style few days after he landed Nigeria with his family for the season’s holiday. He was arrested around 4:30 a.m. at his home in Nnewi on New Year’s Day, according to his brother, Paul.
Paul Elombah said he was present at the time the security agents stormed their home.
“Valuables including telephones, laptops and many other means of contact and communication were removed from us as they ransacked our rooms,” said one of them while they were being arrested.
We were informed at SARS Anambra State’s headquarter that the reason for the arrest is that www.elombah.com wrote an article against the Inspector General of Police.
Mr. Elombah was initially taken to a SARS detention facility in Anambra but was later moved to Abuja around 7:00 a.m., his brother said.
“They are all in handcuffs Mr. Daniel Elombah, 4 of his brothers and 2 other relatives who were found in his residence have all been taken away along with him”, the witness reported.
The eye witness was able to confirm that there was heavy gunshots in his house probably to scare away any potential intervention from neighbours and that the SARS team even threatened to waste them if they resisted arrest.
Several questions are being asked at this moment by other prominent online media observers who wished to know what the Nigeria Police SARS is doing in a non robbery matter. Could it be that Mr. Daniel Elombah is now among the list of wanted persons by the Nigerian government over his nonpartisan, critical and objective outlook to happenings and events in the country from his diaspora perspective?
Or is he being hounded because of the vociferous nature of his online website www.elombah.com which has been one of the most credible and reliable online platforms in the country today.
As it stands elombah.com is currently under attack and this is becoming a clear case of unwarranted media intimation as nobody knows which other online media platform or practitioner would be the next.
According to Daniel Elombah’s wife there was no prior notice or invitation from any government security agency before this invasion and subsequent arrest which indicates that this could clearly be another form of media intimidation by state authorities.
