*When the NFF has about N4.5bn to collect from FIFA
*Another N180m from CAF and many other sources
From Patrick Omorodion
It is a known fact that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is to get $12.5 million (about N4.5billion) from FIFA for the Super Eagles qualification for the World Cup. Out of this amount, FIFA is expected to release the sum of $2.5 million (about N900m) for the team’s preparation. Dalung, the Minister of Sports wants his own N3billion.
This is in addition to the $500,000 (about N180m) already approved for the NFF by CAF to assist the Super Eagles in their build-up to their sixth appearance at the world’s greatest football showpiece.
Despite all these, the sports Minister, Solomon Dalung is still proposing to President Buhari to release N3bn to him to help support the Eagles World Cup campaign.
He exposed himself however, when he disclosed that he would send a powerful federal government delegation to support the Eagles in Russia. This delegation is not going to be made of real football fans o, but well fed politicians and friends of the minister, some of whom cannot even clap during matches.
It is ironic that Dalung who labelled the sports ministry as a corrupt organisation which denied him of his estacode in 2002 when he was part of a federal govt delegation to the Nations Cup in Mali that year is proposing to have his own federal govt delegation too. What is the guarantee that, like they allegedly did to him in 2002, he will not do same to those he wants to carry to Russia at the expense of tax paying Nigerians.
Those who know have told the NFF to seek funds to prepare the Super Eagles and pay back when they get the FIFA money. It is on record that money from the Federal Government is never returned when the FIFA money comes but goes into private pockets, so President Buhari should save the country from being scammed.
The NFF should get repayable loan from banks or from their numerous sponsors and handle such funds by themselves and not allow Dalung to handle it as he may not release everything they need to prosecute the World Cup campaign,
A couple of weeks ago he was castigating the Presidential Task Force set up for the 2010 World Cup for wasting govt resources without even knowing that the money was sourced by the PTF from outside govt. Now he has gone cap in hand to President Buhari to seek for money that may not be accounted for at the end of the day.
