Senate President Cup: Delta takes early lead in softball

Delta state softball team started their campaign in the on-going National U-15 Baseball and Softball Championship, tagged ‘Senate President Baseball and Softball Cup on a good note, beating Lagos state 13-6.

They will take on Bayelsa state team Wednesday in the first match of the day, while host Kwara state takes the centre stage against Lagos.

Kwara will continue their search for gold Thursday, when they play Delta in a match that promises to be explosive. Also Thursday, Lagos will play Bayelsa state.

In baseball, Lagos and Delta will play the first match Wednesday, while host Kwara tackle Bayelsa. They will play Delta state on Thursday as Lagos plays Bayelsa.

The third and fourth placed teams in both baseball and softball after the round robin encounters, which is expected to end on Thursday, will fight for the third place prize, while the first and second placed states play in the final.

The championship, which was introduced in honour of Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has been scheduled to end on 10th February, 2018.

The competition will be used to pick talents ahead of All African Games and the Olympics.

Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association (NBSA) will use the opportunity to hold its Annual General Meeting on Thursday and Friday, in Ilorin. The meeting will review the activities of the association and also discuss the way forward for baseball and softball in Nigeria

The occasion would be used to honour the founding fathers of Baseball and Softball, General Ishola William (Rtd), Dr (Mrs) Ndi Okereke, while late Colonel Friday Ichide will be remembered.

Also the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki would be honoured for his contribution to youth development in Kwara state and Nigeria.

Others that would be honoured are Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, Kwara State Governor. Barrister Solomon Dalung, Speaker, Kwara House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim and Senator Abdulfatah Buhari from Oyo State.

Others are Alhaji Baba Wahab, the Chief of Staff Kwara State Government, Alhaji Kayode Adeyemi, SSA Government House, Dr. (Mrs) Felicia Kisira, the Wife of the Deputy Governor of Kwara State, Mr. Victor Fingesi, President, Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association (NBSA), Mrs. Ronke Champion-Adeyemi, President/CEO, Peace Hospice and Palliative Care, Alhaji Raheem Oladimeji, the Founder, Al-Hikmah University, Mrs Victoria Sodipo, PRO NBSA, Pharmacist Kale Ayo, Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development and Alhaja Garuba, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development.
