Senate sends Customs CG out, orders him to come in uniform
*Don’t address us in mufti
For disregarding the request to appear before her in uniform, the Senate on Thursday walked out the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Col Hameed Ali (rtd).
Ali, was summoned to appear before the Senate at plenary in his uniform to explain the rationale behind the now suspended vehicle duty policy.
He however, appeared at the Red Chamber in white caftan, a situation that angered the Senators.
The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, asked why he was not in his Customs uniform as demanded.
Responding, the Customs Boss said no law mandates him to wear uniform while discharging his duties.
He also faulted the letter from the Senate summoning him, saying it did not state that he should appear in uniform.
In their contributions, many Senators posited that Colonel Ali should not be allowed to address the plenary in mufti.
Consequent upon the consensus views expressed, Senator George Sekibo, moved the motion to walk out the embattled Customs boss out and was seconded by Senator Barnabas Gemade.
However, Colonel Ali has again been directed to return to the Senate next week Wednesday in Customs uniform.
