Senator Dino Melaye’s ABU certificate is fake – Investigations

*ABU offers B.Sc but he has B.A

*His name misspelt on his school certificate

Senator Dino Melaye  (with additional names) may evidently be licking his sore wounds by now over the celebrated certificate scandal. Investigations from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have indicated that the Bachelor of Arts certificate purportedly obtained by the senator from the institution may be fake.

Dino Melaye is the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District at the National Assembly and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

PUNCH investigations punctured holes in Senator Melaye’s claim that he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts [Geography] certificate.

The famed institution disclosed that it only offers B.Sc. Geography and not B.A. Geography as reflected on Melaye’s statement of results.

The B.Sc. [Bachelor of Science] certificate, by implication, means that ABU offers Geography as a Science subject and not Arts, under Faculty of Science and not Faculty of Arts.

The document shows Melaye’s Bachelor of Arts statement with ABU logo on it.

The statement was issued by the Office of the Registrar, Academic Office and dated 3rd February, 2000, and was signed by B. B. Mshelthlila.

The qualification scandal has engendered controversy at the upper chamber of the National Assembly with the Senate pledging to investigate the ruse.

The Senate committee on Ethics and Privileges had vowed to investigate allegations levelled against Melaye over the fake certificate scandal.

Trouble had begun on Monday, 20th March, 2017 when Sahara Reporters, an online news medium, in a tweet alleged that the Senator did not graduate from ABU for his first degree. That was against his claim that he studied Geography in the prestigious institution.

The news medium also alleged that Melaye bribed his Head of Department, who assisted him to forge his transcript. In a series of tweets via its Twitter handle, @SaharaReporters, the online news medium said some lecturers in the Geography Department insisted that Melaye did not graduate from the department and that his name was not on the graduation list because he failed five compulsory courses.

Reacting to the allegations, Dino Melaye slammed a N5 billion libel suit among other charges on SaharaReporters for breaking the fake certificate news.

The senator, apart from bagging a third class, also possesses a diploma certificate from the University of Jos.

However, the senator only has a statement of results from ABU.

Melaye, taking to his twitter handle, dismissed the allegations and dared SaharaReporters to sue him if it had authentic evidence to back its claims:

“SaharaReporters, please sue me and ABU if it is true that I did not graduate from Zaria. Tell Magu (EFCC Chairman) to arrest and prosecute me,” he wrote.

Boasting that he was currently a student in ABU pursuing his seventh degree, he added: “Go round all the UNIS (universities) I attended in digging more.”

A day after the news broke, Dino Melaye, while speaking on the floor of the Senate, also addressed himself as an “authentic graduate” of ABU.

ABU’s Information Officer, Adamu Mohammed, had promised that the institution would come out with its position on Wednesday 22nd March, but failed to do.

Other issues begging for explanations are discrepancies evidenced in various statement of results paraded by Senator Melaye.

While the ABU certificate has “Daniel Jonah Melaye”, the senator’s NYSC discharge certificate, which was issued on 8th July, 2001, read “Melaye Daniel”.

See the attached petition below by Dino Melaye to the Inspector General of Police against SaharaReporters:

Also, in the diploma certificate issued to him by the University of Jos on 3rd August, 2006, his name read “Daniel Dino Melaye.”

He was issued an Advanced Diploma certificate in Law, Security and Conflict Resolution. He finished with ‘Lower Credit’ on 3rd August, 2006.

Moreover, in his Senior School Certificate in 1992, his name read ‘Melaiye Daniel Jonah O.’ with Melaye being wrongly spelt. May be this was a typographic error but other pointers are going south.

www.gongnews.net checks on the graduation list of students of Geography in the same year the man who combines Daniel and Jonah as his names, his was missing on the list. Our conjecture is that, may be since his own degree was a B.A. it may have been in the Faculty of Arts. The graduation list of that year did not show that Geography was ushered in that Faculty.

The list of graduating students organised in Surname, other names, degree, department and year of graduation for the year which was obtained from the University are:
