Sokoto govt to construct three new stadia

*First SWAN Executive in 15 years inaugurated

Sokoto state government is to construct three stadia as part of efforts to revolutionise sporting activities in the state.

The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sport, Alhaji Abubakar Ladan announced this Saturday at the inauguration ceremony of the state chapter of the Sport Writers Association of Nigeria held at the press centre.

He however didn’t disclose the amount for the new stadia which he said would be located in the three senatorial zones.

The places where they would be located are Tangaza, Sabon Birni and Tambuwal local government areas.

He stated that governor Aminu Tambuwal was according sporting activities the deserved attention and would leave no stone unturned in revitalising the sector.

“The essence is to address youth restiveness by engaging them in sporting activities to be able to adequately and effectively represent the state in the national and international tournaments,” he said

He added that the stadia would be provided with state of the art facilities.

He commended the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for the emergence of new SWAN Executive Committee in the state and assured them of support.

Earlier, chairman of the council, Alhaji Isa Shuni said this was the first time the state was having SWAN Executive in the last 15 years, urging the newly inaugurated executive committee of the association to ensure membership were drawn from the six chapels of the council.

He also urged them to ensure adequate coverage of sporting activities in the state.

The newly elected executive include Kabiru Gobirawa of Rima Radio as chairman, Olugbemi Adeniyi of the Punch newspaper as vice chairman and Usman Zubairu of NTA as secretary among others.
