2020 WAFU B U-20 Tournament: Benin replaces Togo as hosts

Benin Republic has replaced fellow West Africans Togo as hosts of the WAFU B U-20 tournament, media officer of Nigeria’s U20 men’s team Andrew Randa confirmed on Tuesday.
West Africa Football Union, WAFU announced Benin Republic as the new host of the U20 regional championship now kicking off on December 5th instead of the old date billed for Togo from November 18 to December 2.
Togo pulled out citing latest surge in the the number of victims of Coronavirus pandemic as reasons and WAFU postponed the championship before settling for Benin.
WAFU in the early hours of Tuesday, yesterday named Benin Republic as the new host of the qualifying for a place in the U20 and U17 in Africa cup of Nations AFCON holding in Mauritania and Morocco next year .
The U20 qualifiers will hold from December 5th to December 20 in Cotonou the Benin Republic capital while the U17 will be played from January 5th to 20th, 2021 at the same venue.
The cadet qualifiers was initially scheduled to run from December 5 to 20.
The Flying Eagles will meet Ghana’s Black Satellites and the Junior Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire while Benin Republic will play Niger Republic and Burkina Faso.
At the draws conducted Tuesday, seven-time African champions, Flying Eagles of Nigeria were placed in the same Group B asfor the WAFU B U-20 tournament taking place in the Republic of Togo from November 18 to December 2.
Hosts Togo, Niger Republic, Benin Republic, and Burkina Faso will battle it out in Group A of the tournament, from which the top team will qualify to represent the zone at the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations that will be held in Mauritania.
Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, champions of Africa in 2001 and 2007, and five-time world will play Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.
Both Nigeria U20 and U17 are already in camp for the competition that will be used to select countries that will play in the underage tournaments.
