Due process: State Finance Commissioners attend seminar in Abuja

As a way to address the problem of Nigerian declining revenue, the Efficiency Unit of the Federal Ministry of Finance in furtherance of the current administration’s objective of ensuring prudence in public expenditure on Wednesday organised a workshop about due process on Cost Management on Overhead Expenditure for States at the Finance Headquarter in Abuja.

Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, in her opening remark said the challenges being experienced by all tiers of government as a result of the sharp drop in revenue accruing to the federation cannot be over emphasised.

The essence of the workshop amongst other things is to provide useful tips on how to identify the various elements of cost as well as how to manage them.

Adeosun maintained that in the last 18months, President Mohammadu Bahari’s administration has been confronted with lower revenues in the face of high recurrent expenditure, large infrastructural deficit and high level of unemployment.

To this end, measures has been adopted to help diversify the economy, increase revenue sources and also ensure best value in government spending by eliminating wastages and leakages.

Meanwhile, Acting Chairman of Commissioners’ of Fiance forum, Obinna Mbata (Imo State) addressing journalist said it was an opportunity to hear steps which the Efficiency Unit have taken at the federal level so as to enable them know areas where they can take some positives from what is happening at the federal level to the states/ local government.

In his opening speech, Mbata mentioned that almost all the states of the federation has some form of the efficiency unit called “the due process unit”.

According to Mbata, there will be some sort of collaboration with the Due process offices at the state level with the Efficiency Unit to see how some of what they are offering at the federal level will be sunk into the states.

He emphasised that if there is need for partnership, then the Efficiency Unit will be invited to the state to look at it further as well as offer suggestions especially for those states that are doing very well.
