Former Flying Eagles striker and Water FC of Abuja pointman, Emeka Chinonso, has set his sights on the Super Eagles’ striking position saying he is ready to challenge likes of Lille of France striker, Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu of KRC Genk of Belgium as the senior national football team’s point man.

Chinonso, 19, who was speaking with the journalist in Abuja on Tuesday, was part of Coach Paul Aigbogun’s team to the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland. He said that he possesses the qualities and character to lead the Super Eagles’ attack in Cameroon and Qatar. The Super Eagles has relied solely on Osimhen since the retirement of Manchester United new boy, Odion Ighalo to bang in goals.

However, Chinonso is of the opinion that if the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr extend his invitation to him to be part of the Eagles’ squad, he will not be found wanting as he will give Osimhen a run for his money and also complement the Lille striker in the Eagles’ attacking line.

“I believe I am very much in shape and I am in form too. If called into the national team today, I have no doubt that I will not disappoint Nigerians and Coach Gernot Rohr as we get ready to qualify for the AFCON and the World Cup in 2021 and 2022 in Cameroon and Qatar respectively. I have the qualities to play for top teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid. But I know I have to keep on working hard and improve because playing for the national team is every player’s dream. With due respect, I’m ready to give Victor Osimhen competition in the Super Eagles and also form a productive partnership with him in the attack, ” the Water FC player said. Chinonso who has been compared with Borussia Dortmund’s new boy, Erling Braut Haland, who coincidentally was also at the 2019 U-20 World Cup, has scored 26 goals and provided 15 assists in 17 matches for Water FC. “I am good and ready for the Super Eagles and I know my time will come. I want to be part of the Super Eagles squad to Cameroon and Qatar and I believe I will deliver when called upon,” added Chinonso also dubbed ‘goal alert’.

Nigeria has been grouped alongside Sierra Leone, Lesotho and Benin Republic for the AFCON 2021 ticket and will slug it out with Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia for the first phase of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The Super Eagles will open their AFCON 2021 qualifiers play against Sierra Leone national football team on March 27 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
