IGHALO’S RELATIONSHIP WITH ROHR MAY SEE HIM BACK IN SUPER EAGLES

By Olayinka Elebute

Retired Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo has revealed that his ‘father and son’ relationship with Manager Gernot Rohr may see him lace boots for the senior national team again.

The 30-year-old called it quits after the 2019 Nations Cup where he led Nigeria to a third-place finish and won the golden boot as the tournament’s top scorer with 5 goals.

But the new Manchester United hitman said “I got to understand that you can never say never in life. Because after the World Cup I said never. I even swore that I would never come back to the Super Eagles. But what happened? I came back,” Ighalo said.

“So that’s why I have learnt my mistake, that I will never say never in life, even though it’s not going to happen, but I will never say never in life that’s why I say you don’t know what will come up tomorrow. Ighalo holds regular conversations with national team coach Gernot Rohr about making a return to the Super Eagles.

Ighalo’s move to Old Trafford has once again brought the question to the fore especially after Rohr said he hoped to persuade the striker to make yet another comeback to the Super Eagles.

“Me and Rohr, we talk every day. Even he recently messaged me congrats for my two-year anniversary, that I’m doing well and all that,” Ighalo said referring to the second year anniversary of setting up his orphanage home last December. “We talk almost every time. Coach Gernot Rohr is like a father to me.

“He brought me back after what happened in the World Cup and I said no, I’m not going to go back to the national team. It’s hundred per cent because of him I came.

Rohr finally won and Ighalo returned to spectacular effect, topping the goals chart in the 2019 AFCON qualifying series with 7 goals before going on to score 5 more at the tournament proper to claim the golden boot.

With his recent move to Manchester United, the question of his return to the Super Eagles has once again risen to the fore especially following Rohr’s revelation that he’ll try again to convince

Ighalo to make a return to the Super Eagles.

Given the high regard in which Ighalo holds the Franco-German, a comeback could be very likely.
