Judgesgate scandal: Justice Adeniyi Ademola’s trial starts

Justice Adeniyi Ademola…trial for allegd offences commence

*Granted N100m bail in self recognition

By Sandra Onyekwere

Justice Jude Okeke sitting at an Abuja high court Tuesday granted Justice Adeniyi Ademola, one of the judges accused of taking bribes to avert justice and his wife, Olabowale, on bail on the basis of self recognition in the sum of N50million each.

The judge also held that they were to deposit their international passports at the court.

Whilst delivering his ruling, Justice Okeke said that the prosecution had not objected to an application for the bail of the defendants, hence he would not rule otherwise.

Counsel to Justice Ademola, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), had earlier asked the court to grant his client bail on self recognition.

He stated that since the Department of State Services (DSS) had granted the accused administrative bail on self-recognition, it was necessary that the court should follow suit.

Counsel to Olabowale, Robert Clarke (SAN), aligned himself with the submission of Ikpeazu, but urged the court not to seize the international passport of his client owing to the fact that such would impede her duties as Lagos State’s Head of Service.

Segun Jegede, counsel to the Federal Government and prosecution, did not object to the application for bail because of “the rapidly impending Christmas”. He however asked the court to impose on the defendants stringent conditions that would make them attend the trial.

Following a sting operation on the homes of a number of justices, the Ademolas are facing an 11-count charge of corruption and illegal possession of firearms brought against them by the Federal Government.
