NFF is a government agency answerable to the minister – Abba Yola

Alhaji Abdullahi Abba Yola…sees the whole issue from a different prism

*Congress overshot its power to reply minister

Having come this far, I believe there is no need for any preamble. It may however come at the end of this piece.
We all know the Nigerian Football Federation is a government agency (parastatal) with the Sports Ministry having supervisory function over it (statutorily).

The Hon Minister of Sports is the Executive Council Member that sits over its activities and present same to the council as the need arises.

On the other hand the Nigeria Football Federation must in line with government best practices report to the Hon Minister and should abide by his directives and instructions as a matter of procedure.

From my understanding of the Hon Minister’s address at the AGM he did not ask or direct the Congress to submit written answers to his directives.

His directives was to Nigeria Football Federation, an agency he supervises. However the AGM’s communiqué went a bit outside its mandate by taking up the Hon Minister’s speech and replying him instantly. Paragraph 5 $ 6 of the communiqué are to me unnecessary. It is an affront. Paragraph 7 would have sufficed and given them a platform of doing what is within their mandate.

Taking a cue from what Mr President did in directing the Honourable Attorney General and Minister of Justice to investigate allegations against senior government officials, one would have thought that the Congress would do same and appoint either within them or from among themselves members to verify the Hon Minister’s claim against the Board. That is fairness and justice.

I want to believe that the Congress were not guided and were in a hurry to give the board a clean bill which is very unfortunate.

My call is for the Congress to always act within the confines of its legal framework and keep its distance from the board’s day to day activities which are subject to scrutiny by the Nigerian government and its people.

I also hope that the board especially its President and General Secretary will continue to appreciate the position of the Honorouble Minister on the issues he raised at the Congress and do the needful.

God bless our country and our President.
