*Gladiators storm Abuja for AFN Extra-Ordinary congress

Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa, has promised a new dawn for athletes in the country if voted in as the president of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria.

Okowa, who on Friday emerged as South-south zonal representative in Benin City, Edo State, said the athletes would be the major beneficiary of his administration.

According to him, issues of no funding would be a thing of the past as he will make sure the private sectors come in to support the federation.

“This issue of no fund to run the AFN and sponsor our athletes to competitions will be a thing of the past,” Okowa said.

Meanwhile, as the country look forward to the Elective Congress of the AFN on Monday in Abuja, some of the gladiators are already in the country’s capital city.

Apart from Okowa, who is aiming for the top position, others like the outgoing Vice President, Olamide George, who is also targeting the president position, Lagos Athletic Association chairman, Solomon Alao, are all in Abuja ahead of today’s Extra-Ordinary congress that will precede the election on Monday.

The delegates are also in town with everyone making last minute moves ahead of the election.

It is also reported that the fate of the outgoing Vice President is hanging in the balance as he failed to win the Southwest zonal election held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The election between him and the candidate from Lagos State, Solomon Alao, failed to produce a winner as the vote ended 3-3.

Sports Ministry zonal coordinator in South West, Femi Ajao, said the fate of the two contestants would be decided at the AFN Extra-Ordinary Congress in Abuja on Sunday.
