Nigeria National League side, Prime Football Club has officially been renamed Osun United Football Club by their owner, the State Government of Osun.

Osun Government takes over the full responsibility of funding and ownership of the team in December 2012, having transitioned the process of change of ownership with former owner Oshogbo Local Government.

It will be recalled Oshogbo LG backed out of the club, due to the huge financial implication involved in running the team.

The club has now been rebranded with a new logo as Osun United.

Former Nigeria Football Federation Secretary General, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi, keeps his position as the Chairman of the club alongside other board members.

Ogunjobi explained that the name adjustment was approved by the state governor, Engineer Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, to

create community identity, and supporters’ followership.

The team will now be wearing new and refreshing state colour jerseys designed by official kit supplier of team and the leading kit manufacturers in Nigeria, OWU Sportswear Venture.

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Osun State chapter has commended the State Government of Osun for renaming Prime FC to Osun United Football Club.

According to a statement released by the state chairman, Adeyemi Aboderin, described the renaming of the state owned football club as long overdue, while stating that since the state government has taken over the full running and finance of the club in 2012, it ought to have reflect the new ownership status which is the generality of the state.

It will be recalled that former owner Osogbo Local Government floated the team and named it Prime FC because of the appellation of the Local Government Council.

“I think the entire people of the state will now see Osun United as ours and not that of the people of Oshogbo alone and everyone will now have the sense of belonging and contribute their own quota to the development of the club.

“We therefore urge the state government and management of the team to quickly restructure other sector of the team to reflect the new name of the club, most especially, the supporters club, while its fans base should aggressively be expanded the more to reflect its new status.

“We’re also using this medium to canvass for improve government finance for the club to enable it meet its financial obligations while credible and worthy players be recruited to enhance the profile of the club and as well meet its aspiration of gaining promotion to the elite football league in the country.

“We congratulate Osun United on the new name and it is our hope that it will bring the much desired success and goodluck to the team,” said Aboderin.

He also calls for the support of all, individuals and corporate organizations to rise up to the clarion call by supporting Osun United in all ramifications in order for the club to meet up with its obligations as it is known that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of the team.
