Rugby:Kenya win Africa Men’s Sevens Rugby 2023 , Nigeria finished 8th

 

Kenya senior national rugby men team on Sunday beat South Africa’s 17-12 in the final of the Africa Men’s Sevens Rugby 2023 Final Tournament at the Harare Sports Club in Harare in Zimbabwe.

reports that the Africa Men’s Sevens Rugby 2023 final tournament in Zimbabwe, is the 13th editions of the Africa Men’s Sevens, an annual tournament that serves as the African continental championship in the sevens version of the game of rugby union.

Kenya trailed 12-7 at the break after conceding tries from Selvyn David’s and Christie Grobbelaar.

Speedster Patrick Odongo had given kenya the lead with a converted try. He leveled the game at 12-12 before John Okoth scored the winning try.

With this results,South Africa have dropped to the Olympic repechage where they will vie for the 12th and final slot for Paris 2024 Olympics and Uganda are also in the repechage. They finished third after beating hosts Zimbabwe 24-12.

Six time African champions Kenya emerges victorious from the two-day tournament to take their place in Paris 2024 alongside the already qualified men’s teams of France, New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji, Australia, Uruguay, Ireland and USA.

while South Africa and Uganda will join the second and third placed teams from Asia,Europe,Oceania , North America and South America in the final qualification tournament set for June 2024 for the 12th and final slot to Olympics.

Kenya , who competed at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, and Uganda will also vie for a place in 2024/2025 world rugby sevens series at challenger series in 2024.

Kenya were in Pool B in alongside Zambia, Namibia and Nigeria,maintained unbeaten race in pools B.

With a convincing victory over Nigeria 34-10 in the first match of the qualifiers ,beat Namibia 50-0 and walloped Zambia 38-12 to advanced to quarters final stage with Burkina Faso.

Kenya in quarterfinals stage beat Burkina Faso 26-00 to advanced to semifinals stage with Zimbabwe ( host) and beat them 35-10 to advanced to final with South Africa.

While South African in pools A, with Madagascar, Tunisia and Côte d’Ivoire started their campaign with a win over Côte d’Ivoire 39-0, beat Tunisia 43-0 and beat Madagascar 38-14 to advanced to quarter finals.

In quarterfinals stage beat Nigeria 27-00 to advanced to semifinals and beat Uganda the defending champions 25-14 to advanced to final with South Africa.

Nigeria lost to Zambia 12-28 in the 5th place semifinal 2.

Twelve nations competed in the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens 2023 at Harare Sports Club which includes:Uganda , Zimbabwe ( host), Kenya,Zambia, Madagascar, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Namibia, South Africa, Algeria,Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
